The Graduate & Rumor Has It

THE GRADUATE

My personal rating scale:

5 *'s means WOW!One of my favorite movies :)
4 *'s means I enjoyed watching this movie!
3 *'s means This movie was okay..
2 *'s means I did not like this movie at all
1 * means I hated this movie A LOT!!

I would give " The Graduate" 4 *'s out of 5 *'s.

Producer: Calder Willingham
Director: Mike Nichols

Main actors:
Anne Bancroft as Mrs. Robinson
Dustin Hoffman as Ben Braddock
Katharin Ross as Elaine Robinson

This movie is an american Comedy-drama and It ranked as the seventh greatest film of all time on AFI's 100 Years... 100 Movies, and placed #18 on the list of highest-grossing films in the United States and Canada, adjusted for inflation.

This film was about a young graduate, Ben Braddock, who does not really know what to do with his future. But not enough of that, a woman, Mrs. Robinson, some friends of his parents starts to flirt with him all the time. After a while, he realizes, that she is trying to seduce him!! He totally freaks out, first, because she is married and second, because she is way too old for him. Eventhough he is very ancious and shy in the beginning, he still decides to sleep with her, way more than once.
After some time, it just gets routine, that they meet in like a hotel room.
But then there is another problem, Ben falls in love with Mrs. Robinsons daughter, Elaine. But Mrs. Robinson does not want them to see each other, that is what she was trying to avoid the whole time. But Ben and Elaine don't want to listen to what she says, so they just meet each other secretly... But after Elaine finds out what Ben did with her own mother, she is very disappointed and mad and she goes away to marry another man. Mrs. Robinson is happy about it, very happy. Is Ben going to get Elaine back??

I thought this movie was hilarious. Very good actors, especially Ben, he was so clumsy and just funny the whole time. The beginning was a little boring, because nothing happened. But I sometimes I thought it was kind of really gross, because she seduced him and she is sooo much older. I really don't like it if older women do something with young men.
I don't really know if I liked the ending, it was weird. Because Ben and Elaine just ran away, they were sitting on this bus, and they looked very, very sad. It seemed like they have nothing to talk about. And that was kind of an open ending, too, and I really don't like open ending. :)
Mrs. Robinson was just really entertaining, too. She knew exactly how to handle little Ben, she knew what to say, so that he was speechless and helpless. I think she knew exactly what she was doing throughout the whole movie. It seemed like it was all planned by her.
I also thought it was mean, how she did all this with Ben and then she would not let him see her. It is not even her decision who her daughter marries or goes out with. I don't think that was right what she did, because she hurt her own daughter with that, too.
All in all, I really, really liked that movie. And it is definitly not a waste of time to watch it.

Good quotes:
Elaine: Good night.
Benjamin: Are we getting married tomorrow?
Elaine: No...
Benjamin: Day after tomorrow?
Elaine: I don't know. Maybe we are, and maybe we're not.

Room Clerk: Are you here for an affair, sir?
Benjamin: What?
Room Clerk: The Singleman party, sir?
Benjamin: Ah, yes, the Singleman party.

RUMOR HAS IT

This movie also gets 4 *'s out of 5 *'s from me.

Director: Rob Reiner
Writer: Ted Griffin

Main Actors:
Jennifer Anniston as Sarah Huttinger
Kevin Costner as Beau Burroughs
Shirley MacLaine as Katharine Richelieu
Mark Buffalo as Jeff Daly

This movie was kind of a following of " The Graduate". Like the second generation.
In this movie, the Graduate was actually a movie, that you could watch in theatres, too.
In the movie, Rumor has it, The Graduate is kind of a representation of the life of a specific family, which is Sarah Huttingers family in Rumor Has it. Her mother was Elaine, they just used different names and characters. Elaine died, when Sarah was little. In the beginning Sarah does not know that, the movie The Graduate is actually her family's life.. When she finds out, she really wants to find Ben, who in this movie is called Beau. She wants to know if he is her dad and she thinks it is really weird that this man slept with her mother AND Grandmother.
But then she also ends up sleeping with him, which she really regrets, because he could be her father. But is he really, or did Elaine marry somebody else in the end?

I thought this movie was pretty cool, too. It was kind of cool, how they used it for the second generation from " The Graduate". I thought Mrs. Robinson in this movie, was just hilarious, her attitude and funny quotes were really entertaining.
I don't really know what to think of Sarah, when she slept with Beau, although he could be her dad. That was kind of reaaaaalllyyyyyy disgusting. And then with that she also cheated on her fiancee. Soo mean. But it was so nice from him, that he forgave her for that in the end. She should really appreciate that, but I think she did.
I really enjoyed watching this movie, it was fun to see how it was connected to The Graduate, but kind of confusing, too, because the characters were different and the names, too.
And after I watched it, The Graduate did not seem real to me anymore. It seemed like, it was really just a movie with actors. ( which it really was, but I'm talking from the view of Rumor Has It) All in all: Good Movie!! Watch it :)

Memorable quotes:

Annie: I'm the most screwed-up person in the world!
Sarah: You're not even the most screwed-up person in this room!

Jeff: So you're gonna just walk up to him and ask him point-blank?
Sarah: Well, I guess I could walk in and yell "Hey, Dad", and see if he turns around.

Slumdog Millionaire

My personal rating scale:
5 *'s means WOW!One of my favorite movies :)
4 *'s means I enjoyed watching this movie!
3 *'s means This movie was okay..
2 *'s means I did not like this movie at all
1 * means I hated this movie A LOT!!

My personal rating for "Slumdog Millionaire" is 5 *'s ou of 5 *'s.

Director: Danny Boyle
Producer: Christian Colson

Main actors:

Ayush Mahesh Khedekar as Younger Jamal
Tanay Chheda as Early Teenage Jamal
Dev Patel as oldest Jamal Malik

Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail as Younger Salim
Ashutosh Lobo Gajiwala as Early Teenage Salim
Madhur Mittal as oldest Salim Malik

Rubina Ali as Younger Latika
Tanvi Ganesh Lonkar as Early Teenage Latika
Freida Pinto as oldest Latika

Anil Kapoor as Prem Kumar, the game show host.

This movie is a 2008 British movie but it was set and filmed in India. Slumdog Millionaire was nominated for ten Academic Awards in 2009 and it won 8 !!
This is also a kinf of a foreign and independent movie, actually from Bollywood which is the Indian-version of Hollywood.

This story tells about two little brothers, Jamal and Salim, they grew up in India in a very poor slum. When some people kill their mom, the boys are all alone on the streets, they have nowhere to go.Then they meet a little girl called Latika, she is in their age and does not have a family to go to either. Jamal and Salim take her with them. So they live on a garbage hill, but then some men find them and take them with. In the beginning they seem pretty nice, but then Salim finds out that they just want to kill Jamal and Latika and all the other streetkids that they caught already. So the two brothers escaped, but they leave Latike behind. Then the boys grow into young teenagers and they try to find some jobs as illegal tourguides. But they get caught and they have to flee again. Jamal is very sad, because he misses her friend, Latika, who he actually has fallen in love with. He tries to find her the whole time in his early adulthood.
Actually during those scenes of the boys' lives, the whole movie plays in the show called
" Who wants to be a millionaire?". Jamal is playing in this show and he wins a million $!!!!! But the people wonder, why, because how can he have such a wide knowlegde if he was a streetkid all his life long? But during the movie, you find out that the answers are all written thorughout his whole life and everything just fits perfectly. But back to Jamal and Latika: Is Jamal ever going to find the love of his life again?????

I thought this movie was soooooo AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!! I really liked almost everything about it.
Although, I thought, too, that it was hard to watch, because it seems so incredibly real. It's like you are in there and you just want to help the people in those slums :( I felt so sorry for them, the whole time, but I think the boys learned how to deal with it pretty fast and pretty good.
It was sad that they lost their mother, that's what I thought!
During the whole movie, i really just wanted to know what will happen next. I was always so excited to go back into class. This movie was so intense, but I am glad it had a happy ending. The ending was really, really cute and I liked how they did their typical indian dance in the end.
I really like Bollywood movies and I used to watch them all the time, but "Slumdog Millionaire" was one of the best ones!
The only thing I did not really like was that they had this indian accent when they talked english, and for me, even being an exchange students, I had to listen very closely to understand everything, but that was okay, because I got most of it.
I thought the beginning of this movie was very intense, with the torture scenes of Jamal, and I was just like:" What kind of movie is that? That's really horrible!". But then it got so amazing and I never ever wanted it to stop. But then it did, and I was sad. :(
I very glad I watched this movie and I highly recommend it for everybody who wants to watch it.

Some memorable quotes:

Jamal Malik: I knew you'd be watching.
Latika: I thought we would meet only in death.
Jamal Malik: This is our destiny.
Latika: Kiss me.

Middle Jamal: [seeing the Taj Mahal] Is this heaven?
Middle Salim: You're not dead Jamal.
Middle Jamal: What is it? Some hotel?

Latika: You want to do something for me?
Jamal Malik: Anything.
Latika: Then forget me!

My Cinema Paradiso

CINEMA PHS
by Doris, Jamie and Inga

This is our Cinema Perham High School.
In the first picture you can see a person arriving to this high school. For us it is more a new high school, with a different language in a totally different country. The person on the picture looks very excited, just like we were when we came here. The movements and the way she walks already shows that she is anxious to go inside and see part of her new life.
The second picture shows a trade with fast food on it. This is a very typical american meal for us. In our home countries we eat very different food from this, so the picture also represents the cultural differences between here and our real homes. The picture is also a symbol for us gaining a lot of weight, probably because there is such a big difference between the varieties of food.
In America it's a lot of fast food, Burgers, Sandwiches, French Fries,... and in our countries we often ate veggies and fruits, just way healthier food.
The third picture is a person standing in front of the school. It represents that the person finished this Exchange Year and you can see a couple paths. That should mean that after we are done with this High School Year we have to choose a path to walk along. It will be a hard decision, but everybody will have to make it. There is no way around it.
The fourth picture shows us three after this year. Eventhough it was only a year that we stayed here, we grew into more mature women. This exchange year helped us a lot to be more grown-up and that might help us with making our desicions of which path we should choose for our future lives.

If I would compare this to the movie that we watched called " Cinema Paradiso", I think the first picture refers to Toto who came to that movie theatre. He didn't really know what to expect, just like us, when we came to PHS. He just wanted to know how to work the theatre, like us, we wanted to know what the shoolsytem is like.
The second picture is with us ganing weight and Toto gained wisdom. Wisdom how to work in the theatre, because Alberto teached him how to.
The third picture is Toto leaving the theatre, after Alberto got blind, he did not want him to have the same life. So he tells him to never come back.
With us it will be different, because we will be happy to come back and visit everybody again.
The last but not least picture is us and we turned into women, just like Toto did into a young and mature man.

V for Vendetta

My personal rating scale:

5 *'s means WOW!One of my favorite movies :)
4 *'s means I enjoyed watching this movie!
3 *'s means This movie was okay..
2 *'s means I did not like this movie at all
1 * means I hated this movie A LOT!!

My personal rating for "V for Vendetta" is 3 *'s out of 5 *'s.

Director: McTeigue
Producer: Larry Wachowski and Andy Wachowski
Main actors:
Hugo Weaving ( as V)
Natalie Portman ( as Evey)
Stephen Rea ( as Inspector Finch)
Stephen Fry ( as Dietrich)

This movie actually has a whole bunch of genres, those are: Anarchist, Mystery, Postapocalyptic and Superhero. It takes part in England, London. Before the film, V for Vendetta was a series in black and white ( between 1982 and 1985)

The movie starts out with a young woman called Evey, who gets rescued from the state police by a masked vigilante known as "V", who takes on a future fascist dictatorship that came in britain after a big war.
V ignites a revolution when he detonates two London landmarks and takes over the government-controlled airwaves, he wants his fellow citizens to rise up against tyranny and oppression. But when Evez finds out the truth about V's mysterious background, she also finds out the truth about herself and she emerges to bring freedom and justice back to society.

I thought some parts of this movie were kind of really boring, but then on the other hand some were really exciting and I just wanted to know what would happen next.
The mask of V kind of really distracted me thoughout the whole movie, because it is smiling. Smiling to me means happiness most of the time, but sometimes he was screaming or he was mad, and I am sure behind the mask he was not smiling, that confused me a lot. But maybe they made it to really confuse or inspire people, I don't know.
I was also kind of amazed by Evey, because she shaved her head only for this movie ( i think) and that is really brave, because I would never do such thing.
About the movie, I can't really say that much, because I missed a lot of it, like a whole hour.
But I certainly saw the last scene and I really, really liked it. When V died and they put him into the subway and then the explosion. I just liked it how they made it, and also all the peopple that came to watch it with the V masks, I liked that, too. Although I did not really get, why the people that aleardy died came to watch it. But I also thought it was cool, how they pretended like the explosions were fireworks :)
And I thought it was interesting, because the Big Ben got destroyed through that and I have been there and that makes everything more exciting.
Well I think this movie had a whole bunch of symbols, but I can't remember all of them. But for sure the color black, roses, the mask, ...
I actually didn't think the movie was THAT bad, but it was not the best movie of all times.

Some quotes:
V: Remember, remember the 5th of November. The gunpowder, treason and plot. I know of no reason why the gunpowder treason should ever be forgot.

V: I don't have a name. You can call me "V".

Evey: Are you a Muslim?
Dietrich: No. I'm in television.

V: More than 400 years ago a great citizen wished to embed the fifth of November forever in our memory. His hope was to remind the world that fairness, justice, and freedom are more than words, they are perspectives. So if you've seen nothing, if the crimes of government remain unknown to you, then I suggest you allow the fifth of November to pass unmarked.

The Simpsons

My personal rating scale:
5 *'s means WOW!One of my favorite movies :)
4 *'s means I enjoyed watching this movie!
3 *'s means This movie was okay..
2 *'s means I did not like this movie at all
1 * means I hated this movie A LOT!!

My personal rating for "The Simpsons Movie" is 2 *'s out of 5 *'s

Director: David Silverman
Producer: Al Jean
Main characters: Homer Simpson by Dan Castellaneta
Marge Simpson by Julie Kavner
Bart Simpson by Nancy Cartwright
Lisa Simpson by Yeardley Smith
Grampa Abraham Simpson by Dan Castellaneta

This movie is an Animation film, but it is also a comedy. Of course it is an american movie :)
and it is also based on the famous and popular TV show called "The Simpsons".
This movie came out in 2007 and for example in Great Britain it was voted for the best comedy of the year.

The movie "The Simpsons" was about a very complicated family, with mother and father and three kids. It also shows a lot about the problems in our time and it makes fun of all kinds of stuff, like bands, titanic, the government, spiderman, some other famous movies, Arnold Schwarzenegger...
But basically the whole movie is about this family that gets into fights, into trouble, etc.
First their Grampa has a prophetic vision in church about what things are going to happen in the future to their town called Springfield.
Lisa, the daughter, falls in love with a guy Collin and they decide to keep their town clean and they want everybody to participate and to stop pollutioning their lake.
Meanwhile, Homer the father of the family decides to adopt a pig. Of course, pigs have to poop and he has to clean it. So he puts the pig's sewer into a container and dumps it into the lake, that is supposed to be kept clean, but a radioactive leak from the Nuclear Power Plant causes danger for whole Springfield. The government decides to doom Springfield, they are even talkingabout dooming it FOREVER. Everybody in the town is angry with Homes, because it's his fault, they are all after him. After a wild and intense chase after them, Homer and his family manages to escape from the doom. Now they are moving to Alasca, and there they experience even more adventures...

I did not like this movie, but that's probably also because I really hate the TV show, too.
Although I think the movie was a liiiiiittle better than the TV show, I thought it was just really
exaggerated and not that funny at all.
The character I like the least is Homer. He is just way too stupid ( sorry, I don't mean to offend anybody who likes him :) Throughout the whole movie, he did the weirdest things somebody could ever do, and that's probably supposed to be his personality, but I could never spend more than 2 minutes with him.
I do not understand it when people say:" The Simpsons are sooo hilarious!", because I don't think it was that funny. Sometimes it was just so stupid, that you had to laugh.
Although some quotes from them were a funny.
But to me, this family just seems too messed up and it's disturbing that they are yellow, that's probably again just because I don't really like cartoons, just a few.
This movie has kind of a different humor from what I expect from a humorous movie, but
I guess you can watch it without falling asleep or cheering from happiness after it's over :)

Some funny quotes:
Marge Simpson: Mmmm, best kiss of my life.
Homer Simpson: Best kiss of your life, so far.
and
Grampa: [shouting from church floor] Twisted Tail... A thousand eyes... Trapped forever!
and
Girl on Phone: You hang up first.
Boy on Phone: No, you hang up first.
Girl on Phone: Okay. [hangs up]
Boy on Phone: What the-? She hung up on me!
and
Lisa Simpson: Mom, I've got to go find Colin.
Marge Simpson: Not now, sweetie. Doomsday is family time.

Psycho

My personal rating scale:
5 *'s means WOW!One of my favorite movies :)
4 *'s means I enjoyed watching this movie!
3 *'s means This movie was okay..
2 *'s means I did not like this movie at all
1 * means I hated this movie A LOT!!

My personal rating for "Psycho" is 4 *'s out of 5 *'s.

Director: Alfred Hitchcock
Producer: Alfred Hitchcock
Main actors: Janet Leigh ( as Marion Crane)
John Gavin ( as Sam Loomis)
Anthony Perkins ( as Norman Bates)
Vera Mies ( as Lila Crane)
Martin Balsam ( as Detective Milton Arbogast)

This movie is a suspense/thriller, it is the first "horror" movie they ever made, they also call it the "mother" of all horror suspense movies. This film was made in black and white and it is based on a true story which happened in Wisconsin.

The movie "Psycho" is about two lovers, Marion and Sam, that want to marry each other as soon as possible. Unfortunately they don't have enough money, so Marion decides to steal $ 40,000 in cash. Her goal is to drive to California where Sam actually lives.
But because it would be a very long trip, she stops at a Motel with the name Bates Motel. There she meets the owner Norman Bates and she checks in for a night in a little room.
Everytime Marion talks to Norman, his behavior seems very, very odd. He tells her that his mother lives right next to the Motel in the big house.
The same day, when Marion decides to take a shower, someone stabs her with a knife and she dies. Norman finds her and puts her in a car, then he lets her sink in a swamp.
After a while ( maybe a week) Marion's sister and Sam too start getting concerned, because she still didn't come up from anywhere.
They hire a Detective who starts looking for her all over the place, then he looks in the Bates Motel. After he finds out that she is dead for sure, the Detective tries to find out where her
corps is. And there is also one important question left: Who killed Marion?? And why??

I personally really enjoyed watching this movie, that's maybe because I like all horror movies and scary movies.Of course, nowadays all the horror movies are a lot different compared to this movie. They didn't show as much blood and they didn't show much detail either.Where in our time, they almost show everything.
That sharp music that came up all the time made everything more scary and nervous, I think it was also a symbol for Marion's nervousness and concern.
This movie also had a whole bunch of symbols like the sharp music, water, stuffed birds, peoples names,...
And one thing that I think is interesting is that I was always scared of bathrooms, even before I saw this movie, and originally the "scary" bathrooms are from this movie. Other movies just copied it and made creepy scenes in bathrooms :)
The fact that this movie is based on a real story is VERY scary, it actually makes everything worse. I mean, Norman who kept his dead mother in his house is already very sick and if just somebody would have came up with that, it would be much better. But it actually really happened, so that's pretty scary.
All in all, I think they did a very good job with this movie and it's worth you time to watch it, because everybody who likes scary movies might enjoy it, because it is not exaggerated and detailed like the horror movies nowadays.

Great quotes:
Sam Loomis: You mean the old woman I saw tonight wasn't Mrs. Bates?
Sheriff Al Chambers: Now wait a minute, Sam, are you *sure* you saw an old woman?
Sam Loomis: Yes! In the house behind the motel! I called and I pounded, but she just ignored me!
Sheriff Al Chambers: You mean to tell me you saw Norman Bates' mother?
Lila Crane: It had to be - because Arbogast said so too. And the young man wouldn't let him see her because she was too ill.
Sheriff Al Chambers: Well, if the woman up there is Mrs. Bates... who's that woman buried out in Greenlawn Cemetery?

and:

Norman Bates: A boy's best friend is his mother.

Gone with the Wind

My personal rating scale:
5 *'s means WOW!One of my favorite movies :)
4 *'s means I enjoyed watching this movie!
3 *'s means This movie was okay..
2 *'s means I did not like this movie at all
1 * means I hated this movie A LOT!!

My personal rating for "Gone with the Wind" was 2 *'s out of 5 *'S.

Director: George Cukor
Producer: David O. Selznick
Main actors: Vivien Leigh (in the movie Scarlett O'Hara)
Leslie Howard(in the movie Ashley Wilkes)
Clark Gable (in the movie Rhett Butler)
Olivia de Havilland (in the movie Melanie Wilkes)

This movie's genre is drama-romance and it was adapted 1939 from Margret Mitchell's famous novel (1926) " Gone with the Wind".
The film won 8 Awards and it remains as one of the most popular and commercially successful movie ever made. It also focuses a lot on the Civil War.

This movie was about a woman called Scarlett O'Hara, who falls in love with her friend's husband, Ashley Wilkes. After a short time, he rejects her. Frustrated from that cirumstance, Scarlett marries her friend's husband, Charles. But he goes into war and dies. Scarlett, who is a widow now, moves away from home to her friend and sister-in-law, Melanie Wilkes ( Ashly's wife) in Atlanta.
After the Civil War invades, an old friend named Rhett Butler comes and wants to flee with all of them. But instead of really going with them, Rhett decides to go into war to impress Scarlett, who he has fallen in love with.
After the return to her parents's house( because of the danger during the Civil War), ScarlEtt finds out that her dear mother passed away, which shocks her terribly.
After marrying and losing (death) another man, Scarlett tells herself that she is in deep love with Rhett and she marries him, although deep inside she exactly knows that she is still in love with Ashley.
Scarlett even gives birth to a beautiful daughter, but all she can think of is Ashley and how to get him. After figuring out that his own wife still loves a completly different man, Rhett finally leaves her. And the final question is: Is Scarlett going to get the love of her life Ashley?

During this movie, I asked myself at least three times "Is it over yet?". And the answer was always no. This movie is very, very long, which is really annoying in my opinion. But after I found out that they even cut the length of the film, I was quite happy that I didn't have to watch the long version of it.
In the first few scenes, Scarlett seemed like a fun girl, who knows exactly what she wants and I really started to like her.
Well, that changed a LOT throughout the movie. She got selfish and spoiled and wanted everything to go the way SHE wanted it, otherwise she started yelling and freaking out.
I mean, I understand that she really loved Ashley and that she wanted him so bad, but she just exaggerated. I think, she should have accepted it, that he was married and she could not have him. He was already taken. But she did not, instead she married Rhett.
I didn't even know, which man she actually loved during her marriage with Rhett Butler, but I don't think she knew it either.
All in all, I think the movie was just too mixed up and too much drama to everything, even a little exaggerated, how she married all these man and it was never something serious and she was never really satisfied.
Also, I thought the scenes were way too slow. It took forever for the scenes to change to the next scene and that was kind of bugging me.

A pretty good quote, that I thought was memorable, was:
Scarlett: [to Rhett] If I said I was madly in love with you you'd know I was lying.
and:
Scarlett: Sir, you are no gentleman.
Rhett Butler: And you, Miss, are no lady.
